Norma Ruth Doran

August 24, 1921 — April 25, 2005

Norma Ruth Rose Doran passed away Monday April 25, 2005 at Emory University Hospital. She was born August 24, 1921 at Salem Corners, MN in the upstairs bedroom of a farm house and spent her youth in the mid-west. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1939. During World War II she worked producing bomb sites for the war effort. She and her husband resided in Fenton, MI for several years. They moved to Atlanta in 1958. Her talents were in many areas. She enjoyed gardening, wood carving, copper working, water aerobics and her favorite, adventures in eating. In the late sixties she worked in the German Shepherd Assoc. of Atlanta and was the founder of Shagidor Kennels. She did extensive work with the Atlanta Humane Society for many years and was a huge animal lover caring for up to eleven cats in her later years. She worked for over fifty years with the mentally handicapped and challenged. At the age of 60 she returned to school and attended Ga. State University where she graduated with honors in English literature. Recently at the age of 83 she returned to Emory University adult classes in literature. During her life she was deeply involved with the Catholic Church, the last thirty-five years at St. Joseph?s Maronite Eastern Rite Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-two years, John James Doran and is survived by her sons, Dennis Michael Doran and Patrick John Doran both of Atlanta. Funeral services will be held at St. Joseph?s Maronite Church on Thursday April 28 at 11:00 am with Father Peter Boulos officiating. .Interment will be in Decatur Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:30 pm Wednesday evening with a rosary service at 6:15 pm at A. S. Turner & Sons.
