Mrs. Oleta Chancey Entrekin of Baldwin, formerly of Atlanta and Covington, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Mrs. Entrekin was born September 7, 1912 in Ozark, AL to Martin Edward Chancey and Emma Clifford Stephens. She graduated valedictorian from Arlington, GA High School, received her B.S. in Education from the University of Georgia and her Masters degree in Education from the University of Georgia in 1971. Mrs. Entrekin was a kindergarten/elementary schoolteacher for over 40 years. She taught at Bassett School in Decatur, then, opened her own school, Glenwood Hills Kindergarten, which operated for 20 years. She continued her career in the public school system until she was 75. She taught in Rockdale County initially and retired from Newton County School System in 1986 where she had been previously selected as the Newton County Teacher of the Year. She was active in helping to set state standards for pre-schools and kindergartens and helping organize the Georgia Pre-School Association serving as one of its presidents. She was an active member of the Alpha Delta Kappa teacher’s sorority and served as president of her local chapter. From 1988 until 2002 she was a docent at the Jimmy Carter Library receiving several special service awards and was mentioned in President Carter’s book, The Virtues of Aging. She was a member of Alexander Memorial Presbyterian Church teaching Sunday School there; Lithonia Presbyterian Church where she was an elder and active in Women’s programs, receiving a Lifetime Presbyterian Woman’s Award. After moving to Covington she served in the Covington Presbyterian Church until she went into a nursing home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Lee Entrekin, Sr.; grandson, Herbert Lee Entrekin, III; sisters, Gertrude Chancey Miller and Judith Chancey Hingst. Mrs. Entrekin is survived by her son, Herbert Lee Entrekin, Jr. and wife Gail G. Entrekin of Rabun County, GA; granddaughter, Janet E. Rhoades and husband Robert of Alpharetta;, granddaughter-in-law, Tara Entrekin Prince of Lawrenceville; great grandchildren, Herbert (Hugh) Lee Entrekin, IV, Madelyn Rhoades, Sophia Rhoades, Anna Rhoades, Lauren R. Pusey and her husband David Pusey; sister, Erin Chancey Hawkes of Macon; brother-in-law, Charles Hingst of Nashville, TN and sister-in-law, Loretta Entrekin of Tallapoosa, GA. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner and Sons at 11 a.m. Friday, April 3rd, Dr. Billy Wade officiating. Burial will follow in Decatur Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be sent to: Angel Flight of Georgia, 200 Airport Rd., Suite 227, PDK Airport, Atlanta, GA 30341, where both her son and grandson have been volunteer pilots. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
