Patricia Roney, 83, passed January 24, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. Pat was born and raised in Birmingham, AL to George and Theodora Gavalas and attended the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. After marrying Jimmy Roney in 1959, they moved to Atlanta, GA where they raised their four girls.
Pat was very active in the Greek Orthodox community and was a parishioner of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Annunciation for nearly 60 years. She was also instrumental in the founding of Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene Church in Cumming, GA and later received the prestigious Archangel Michael Award. Pat donated her time and love to the Philoptochos and the Daughters of Penelope philanthropic organizations. She served as a brownie and girl scout leader, room mother for her children, GOYA advisor, etc…, while also establishing a long career at Emory University. Pat left a legacy on the local cathedral by founding the Yiayia’s Greek Bake Sale which continues to serve as a fundraiser for the church. Pat enjoyed traveling with her husband Jimmy, and the two could always be found on the dance floor at every wedding. Pat also truly enjoyed spending time with her ever growing family.
Patricia is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Jimmy Roney and her four daughters: Georgette (Peter) Kennedy, Christina, Diane (Tim) Walters, and Nickolette (Robert Moore). She is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Michael (Erin), Nickolette, and Katrina Kennedy; Connor (Ryan) and Roney Walters; Josh Harrell; Nicolas and Annasofia Moore; and two great grandchildren: Alexander Kennedy and Rhya Walters. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Irene Roney Ray (Samuel) and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and godchildren. Patricia’s long life was filled with loving friends, family, and joyous memories made by those lucky enough to know her. Pat’s memory will forever be eternal and her love will always remain in our hearts.
