Patrick Thomas McNally of Decatur, GA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 4, 2017 at age 87.
Born in Staten Island, NY and raised in Hawthorne, NJ, Patrick graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1949. He attended Rutgers University and then enlisted into the Air Force. He served a tour of duty in the Korean Conflict and reached the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He met his wife Catherine “Katie” Alyward from Parkstown, Glenmore, Ireland at the wedding of a mutual friend and they married on August 17,1957. They raised 4 children in Saddle Brook, NJ and Wyckoff, NJ. Patrick was a member of the Amalgamated Lithographers of America Union and worked as a printing pressman for 25 years. He then joined Consolidated Papers Company as a printer service representative for 10 years.
He retired in 1993 and moved to Little River, SC, where he enjoyed playing golf. Patrick also enjoyed wood working and making furniture. He was particularly good at crafting baby cradles and created 27 cradles for grandchildren, for charity, and for friends. He enjoyed traveling with Katie to Colorado, Ireland, Europe, Hawaii, Australia, and New Zealand. Patrick and Katie moved to Decatur, GA in 2009 to be near family in the Atlanta area. Patrick became known as the “Squire of the Square” as he befriended many Decatur business owners and patrons. He also performed stand-up comedy in the pubs of the Square.
He is predeceased by Catherine “Katie” McNally his wife of 59 years, by his parents Patrick McNally and Julia McNally, and by step siblings Walter McNally and Mary Sheehan. He is survived by his children Mark of Apex, NC and his wife Dinah, John of Sandy Springs, GA, Gregory of Ramsey, NJ and his wife Penny, and Patricia Spaulding of Avondale Estates, GA and her husband Matthew. He will be dearly missed by his 11 grandchildren: Emily Byrne, Dylan McNally, Brenna McNally, John McNally, Joe McNally, Erin McNally, Peter McNally, Alice Spaulding, Sam Spaulding, Luke Spaulding, and Franklin Spaulding.
Visiting hours will be Friday, October 12, 4pm to 7pm at the A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, http://www.asturner.com, 2773 N. Decatur Road, Decatur, GA. A Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Saturday,October 13 at 10am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 636 W. Ponce de Leon Avenue, Decatur, GA. Inurnment of ashes will occur at a later date at Our Lady of Sorrows Mausoleum, Cedar Grove Cemetery, Notre Dame, IN.
