Lt. Col. Paul H. Carpenter, U. S. Army retired, of Clarkston, died Tuesday, August 30, 2005. Lt. Col. Carpenter served in the Airborne during World War II in the Philippines. After the war in 1947, he was stationed in Honshu, Japan, as a Technician 5th Grade. Four years later in 1951, he was in Japan in the 187th Airborne Division. He also served in the Korean Conflict during that time. After two tours of duty in Germany, he returned to Korea for 13 months in 1967-1968 where he was honored for training South Korean paratroopers. Lt. Col. Carpenter retired from active military duty in 1969. On June 11, 1971, he completed the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Distinction at Indiana University/Purdue University. He moved to Georgia in August 1971 and taught ROTC at North Fulton, Roosevelt, and Smith High Schools in Atlanta. During this time, he attended DeKalb Technical College at night for Electronics. After graduating with honors, he taught electronics at DeKalb Tech for several years. He served his church faithfully as a Deacon, TV repairman, and sound and set-up person for a ?Wonderful Wednesday? fellowship and Bible study for international adult ESL students. Lt. Col. Carpenter also found time to work at the GBI and the election polls. As a volunteer, he worked with Clarkston?s Boy Scout Troop, Meals on Wheels, and the Bread Ministry at Clarkston International Bible Church, formerly known as Clarkston Baptist Church. Lt. Col. Carpenter embraced and loved his family and friends. He will be missed by everyone whose life he touched. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Goldie M. Carpenter; daughters, Mrs. Cheryl Paulette Bowman, Tucson, AZ, Mrs. Karen T. Gabrielson (husband Kenneth Gabrielson), GA; son, Mr. Albert Paul Carpenter (wife Laura Carpenter) of Bologna, Italy; sisters, Mrs. Bonnie Harvey, Mrs. Phyllis Lawson, Mrs. Faye Grover, Mrs. Lydia Hammel, all of Dayton, Ohio; brother, Mr. Robert Carpenter; aunt, Minnette Willison; grandchildren, Clay Bowman (wife Reyna Bowman), Clint Bowman, Cheryl Gabrielson, Patrick Carpenter, Steven Carpenter; and two great granddaughters, Kayla Bowman and Alyssa Sotelo. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 4, at 2 pm in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons. Our pastor, Rev. Allen Hill, will officiate. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Clarkston International Bible Church Southern Baptist Convention Disaster Fund; to the American Red Cross for Georgia or Gulf Coast Relief; or to the Veteran?s Hospital. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm Friday and from 6 to 8 pm Saturday evening at A. S. Turner & Sons.
