Pauline Gratton Heywood

July 18, 1926 — January 2, 2017

Pauline Gratton Heywood passed away peacefully on Monday, January 2, 2017 at Hospice Atlanta in Brookhaven, Georgia. She is predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Harvey Heywood, Jr. of Asheville and her brother Pierre Gratton of Montreal, Canada. She is cherished by her surviving sister, Fern Noel of Ottawa, Canada , as well has her daughter, Suzanne Miller (husband Chuck) of Decatur, Georgia , her three grandchildren, Caroline, Audrey and Charlie Miller and many nieces and nephews in Canada.
Pauline was born in Toronto Canada to Aurore St. Marsaille and Joseph Stanislas Gratton. She always claimed that she was practically born on skis, and she was an avid alpine skier and ice skater, as well as a very talented tennis player, having won the Ottawa City Women's Singles Tennis Championship. She graduated from the University of Ottawa and worked with Peter Jennings at the Canadian Broadcasting Company for several years. Pauline was always kind, smiling and optimistic and was a favorite of all who knew her. She had a tremendous love of animals and a special rapport with them.
She met her late husband, Harvey, on a ski trip to Stowe, Vermont. They were married in 1963, and she then moved to Asheville where the couple owned and operated North State Material Company for decades. She was a devoted Catholic and a member of The Basilica of St. Lawrence.
A graveside service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Basilica of St. Lawrence or the Asheville Humane Society.
