Peggy Godwin Shaw Shipley
1918–2011
Peggy was the daughter of Andrew and Frances Godwin of White Springs, Florida. She was one of nine children. She met her husband Walter Shaw, a USN medic, while working for the state government in Tallahassee. She lived in Philadelphia, Chief Shaw’s home port, during World War II. In 1946, the USS Yancey transferred to the San Francisco Naval Yard and she spent the next few years in California. At each new post, she took jobs of increasing responsibility. When Walter transferred to the Naval Hospital at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, she was ready to start her own business, fulfilling a dream she’d had since high school. She lived in Onslow County from 1956 to 2004, and during that time she built three successful retail businesses. She was a charter member and early president of the Jacksonville (NC) chapter of the American Business Women's Association, a sorority sister of Beta Sigma Phi, and a member of Northwoods United Methodist Church for more than forty years. She was married to H. Charles Shipley 1975 to 1987. In 2005, she retired to Atlanta. Peggy is survived by daughters Barbara Shaw Fisher and Deborah Shaw, granddaughter Karen Fisher Moskowitz, and great-granddaughters Rachel, Noa, and Molly Moskowitz.
