Peggy Jane Shoemaker Hayes, age 67, died Monday, July 5, 2010. She was born June 15, 1943 in Philadelphia, PA. She was predeceased by her husband, Zackary Harrison Hayes, Jr.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Richard White and Mr. Charles Reiff Shoemaker, III of Philadelphia, PA. She is survived by her sons, William Blair Hayes, Zackary Harrison Hayes, III and his wife Lindsey; grandson, Zackary Harrison Hayes, IV; sister, Christina White Morris and husband John G.; brother-in-law, Mr. Guy Marion Hayes and wife Shirley; aunt and uncle, Dr. and Mrs. P. C. Purvis of Fairmont, NC; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Hayes, remembered as  popular, vivacious, and an honor student, graduated from Decatur High School in 1961.She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology from UGA in 1965. Mrs. Hayes was an officer in Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. She later earned a degree as a Bacteriologist. Mrs. Hayes was the first woman to be recruited by the Center for Disease Control, where she worked for 38 years. She was a leader in the field of epidemiology and food born bacteria. Mrs. Hayes received several honors and awards in her field. She will be missed by her family and friends. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons at 11 AM on Thursday, July 8. Burial will forward in Historic Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 3715 Northside Pkwy, 400 Northcreek, Ste 300, Atlanta, GA 30327. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM Wednesday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
