Penelope Tullis McCroan, 93, of Atlanta, died January 5, 2011. A native of Valdosta, Mrs. McCroan was a resident of Atlanta most of her adult life. She was a long time member of Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, influencing the lives of hundreds of children. An avid reader, Mrs. McCroan was a member of the Emory Women’s Book Club. She had many years of pleasure with the Mason Woods Sewing Circle and growing beautiful flowers in her garden at home. Mrs. McCroan was preceded in death by her husband, John E. McCroan, Jr. and their daughter, Lachlan M. Fiveash. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Laura and William E. Smith, Jr. of Marietta; sisters, Mildred Stephens of Atlanta, Mary Rines of Riverside CA and Susan Oakes of Alexandria City AL; grandchildren, John Fiveash and his wife Laura, Charles Fiveash and his wife Missy, Lachlan Smith, Kelly Smith and Erin Smith; great grandchildren, Gabrielle, Chase, Hannah, Jacob and Nicholas Fiveash. A memorial service for Mrs. McCroan will be held 11 am, Saturday, January 8, 2011, at Clairmont Hills Baptist Church. Rev. Steven Powell will officiate and a reception will be held following the service in the church fellowship hall. Mrs. McCroan’s urn will be buried at a later time next to her husband at East Side Cemetery in Statesboro. A. S. Turner and Sons.
