Pete Mookas

Panagete (Pete) Mookas passed away on February 3, 2009, at his home in Atlanta, GA, with his family by his side. Pete was born on July 24th, 1932, in The Bronx, N. Y.  His parents were Greek immigrants and he was very proud of his heritage. Known to most as, ‘Pete the Greek’. Pete lived in Atlanta for the past 30 years. He joined the Air Force and served his country during the Korean War. He was stationed in Munich, Germany, and that is where his career began as an Air Traffic Controller for the next 25 years. He was an avid sports fan and loved his Yankees, as well as other New York teams. Pete loved to read spy and adventure novels and loved watching the old westerns on TV. Pete was a very generous and thoughtful person. He raised his sons to be open minded and live in moderation. Pete was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend. Everyone who met Pete loved his ‘special way’ and he loved everyone as well.   He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Rita Tissura Mookas; sons and daughters-n-law, Speros and Viviane Mookas of Knoxville, TN, Zorba and Alexia Mookas of Lilburn, GA; grandchildren, Stavros, Athena,; sisters, Kay Kalogerakis and Alice Simos, both of New York City; many nieces and nephews.  Funeral services will be held Friday, February 6, 2009, at 11:00 A.M., at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of The Annunciation.  Bishop John of Amorion, Father George Alexson and Father Christos Mars will officiate.  Interment Arlington Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 P.M. with a Prayer Service at 7:30 P.M. Thursday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
