Philip Mcdermott Mclaughlin

July 23, 1941 — August 24, 2015

Mr. Philip M. McLaughlin, Jr. died Monday, August 24, 2015. Phil was born in Macon, Georgia. He was a 1959 graduate of Lanier Senior High in Macon and graduated from Georgia Tech in 1965 with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering. He had a rewarding 40-year career at the Georgia Power Company before retiring in 2000. He enjoyed photography, reading, woodworking, and collecting 1950s-1960s rock and roll music. Phil traveled extensively and went on several long-distance bicycling trips. He had a lifelong love of golf both as a decent player and later as a close follower of the sport. He even traveled to Scotland in 1999 and played several of the old courses in the British Open rotation. Phil was a charter member of the Northlake Rotary Club, founded in 1974, and remained an active member, having served as president, historian, and, for several terms, as secretary. He met his wife Kathleen (Taffy) Mitchell in a typical Georgia Tech-Agnes Scott fashion in 1965, and they were married in 1966. They enjoyed many travels together and tried to keep local restaurants in business by eating out frequently. He was very proud of his daughters, both of whom are Georgia Tech graduates. Phil was predeceased by his parents, Philip M. McLaughlin, Sr. and Catherine Beggs McLaughlin, both from Savannah, GA. Survivors include his wife, daughters Laurie E. McLaughlin of Atlanta and Jennifer M. Robertson of Decatur, son-in-law Eric Robertson, grandchildren Rebecca, Owen, and Leah Robertson, brother David S. McLaughlin of Murfreesboro, TN, nephew Colin McLaughlin of TN, niece Laura Carver of TN, and several cousins. Visitation will be from 2-4 Thursday, August 27 at A.S. Turner and Sons in Decatur. Burial will be Saturday at 11am in the McLaughlin family plot in Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rotary Foundation, Attn: Donor Operations, 1560 Sherman Avenue, Evanston, IL 60201-3698, member #595573, club #4136. A.S.
