Phyllis Jordan Deckner passed away on Friday, October 2, 2009, from complications resulting from pneumonia, surrounded by her family and loving friends. She was 72 years old. Phyllis was an Atlanta native and for most of her life was a resident of Avondale Estates. She graduated from Avondale High School Class of 1955. She is preceded in death by her husband Ralph W. Deckner, parents, Lottie Garrett Jordan and William Douglas Jordan and nephew Scott Douglas Jordan. After raising her children, Phyllis went into sales in 1972 and became a consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics. She then went on to a successful real estate career, all the while helping her husband, Ralph build Tomahawk Printing Company in Avondale Estates. In the early 80's she and Ralph obtained the charter and opened the VFW Post 5917 in Avondale Estates and spent 20 years helping Veterans and their families through VA Programs, Bingo, and other charitable functions. She served as Georgia State President of the Ladies Auxiliary and held many other VFW Offices. After closing the VFW in early 2001, she opened “Trash and Treasures”, a thrift and antique shop located in Avondale Estates until closing in 2007. Phyllis enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas, and other casino cities, as well as other destinations including antiquing in the North Georgia Mountains and spending time with family and friends. She enjoyed life with Ralph up until his death in January 2007. She leaves behind son, Douglas W. Deckner of Decatur; daughter, Carole Deckner Nash and husband John of Avondale Estates; brother, James D. Jordan and wife Donna of Monroe; nephew, Richard Jordan, and his children of Loganville; niece, Beth Jordan Moebs and her husband Ken, and their children of Douglasville, brother, Richard Marcus Jordan and wife Vicki of North Myrtle Beach, SC; niece, Ryann Jordan Wilcoxon and husband Buzz of Greenville, SC; niece, Paige Jordon of Charlotte, NC; nephew, Richard Marcus Jordan Jr. of Memphis, TN; and many aunts, uncles and cousins of the Jordan family. She also leaves behind life-long friend of 72 years Barbara West Billert of Carrollton and loving neighbors Jim Glover and Istvan Kolosi of Avondale Estates. Phyllis was a loving mother, sister, aunt and friend who will be greatly missed. May she rest in peace beside the love of her life, Ralph. Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons with Rev. Tom Mozley officiating. Interment Melwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 P.M. Saturday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
