Mrs. Phyllis Mongeon, 83, of Garden City, passed peacefully on Thursday, April 19, 2012 in Decatur, Georgia after a short battle with cancer. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, May 12 at 10:30 a.m. on the beach across the street from 1634 South Waccamaw Drive in Garden City, South Carolina.
Mrs. Mongeon was born in Corning, New York, a daughter of the late Truman Laubach Jacoby and Ruth Sutton Jacoby. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan and one of the first women pilots in Michigan. Along with her loving husband Ed, she worked and volunteered for the American Red Cross in many states and overseas. She was honored for her contributions to aquatics with the Golden Whale Award from the Commodore Longfellow Society. Mrs. Mongeon also volunteered with the ABLE program at Coastal Carolina University for many years as a water aerobics instructor. Her diverse interests included cooking, entertaining, sports, fitness and live music. Surviving are her son, Michael James Mongeon and his wife, Patches, of Atlanta, Georgia; and her beloved boxer, Nick. Mrs. Mongeon was predeceased by her husband, Edmond Joseph Mongeon, son, John Edmond Mongeon, brother, Truman Laubach Jacoby Jr., and sister Barbara Jane Jacoby.
