Pierce Head

May 14, 1927 — November 20, 2009

Pierce Head was born May 14, 1927 in Barnesville, Georgia and soon moved to the Atlanta/Decatur area. Pierce attended Glenwood Elementary School and graduated from Decatur Boys High in 1944. After serving in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific theatre during WWII, Pierce was honorably discharged and returned to Atlanta. He went on to graduate from Georgia State University and he later earned a law degree from Emory University. Pierce began his career with the Georgia Power Company in 1946 as a boiler operator, retiring forty years later as Sr. Vice President of Administrative Services. Pierce eagerly embraced the Company motto "A Citizen Wherever We Serve". Pierce held key leadership positions on the boards of Goodwill Industries, the American Lung Association and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia among others. He was a Mason, a Rotarian, a member of the Georgia Power Ambassadors, and was active in Decatur First United Methodist Church, teaching adult Sunday school for over forty years. Pierce and Jeanne Stokes Head were married in 1949 and together they raised three children. He often remarked that this was his proudest accomplishment. Jeanne died in 2000, months after their 51st anniversary. Pierce married Rowena Stephens Martin in 2002, making their home in Roswell. Pierce was predeceased by his parents, Reuben Pierce Head and Mary Julia Chandler Head, Jeanne and brothers Chandler, Zack and Lloyd. He will be sorely missed by Rowena and by his children Steven Lloyd Head (Ellen) and David Mitchell Head of Roswell and Mary Head Rogers (Earl) of Marietta. His grandchildren Jeanne Stokes Keza, Leigh Ross Keza, Katherine Isabel Head and David Mitchell Head, Jr. also survive their beloved Papa. The family will receive visitors Monday from 6–8 PM. Funeral services will be Tuesday, November 24, 2009 at 1 PM at Decatur First United Methodist Chapel. Bishop L. Bevel Jones and Dr. David L. Naglee will officiate. A. S. Turner and Sons in charge of arrangements. Donations to Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org/georgia or American Diabetes Association, www.diabetes.org., in lieu of flowers. A. S. Turner & Sons
