Mr. Powell (PJ) Haynes, of Atlanta, passed away Saturday, May 1, 2010. He was born on April 9, 1918 in Clermont, Georgia to F. Joe Haynes, Sr. and Dolie Ann Duckett, the tenth of eleven children. He grew up on a very large farm where his family was completely self supporting during the depression. After high school he moved to Atlanta where he worked for the Department of Agriculture before enlisting in the U. S. Army. Mr. Haynes proudly served his country in the European Theater during World War II. After the war he attended Georgia Tech and then found his calling in the hardware business, first with King Hardware and then Beck & Gregg, from which he retired. Powell spent most of his retirement traveling and working in his garden. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 53 years, Lottie Adams Haynes and is survived by his wife of 19 years, Liza Haynes; daughter Anne Hall, husband Jerry and grandson Jeff Hall; sister, Mongah Young and husband James. He is also survived by his step-daughter Jill McNickle, husband Jeff and their children Brittany and Matthew; step-son Doug Hoyem, wife Tami and their children Sam and Katie. Powell also had a large extended family. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 5th at 1:30 P.M. in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons. IntermentDecaturCemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Powell’s memory to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation or a charity of your choice. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12 Noon to 1:30 P.M. at A. S. Turner & Sons.
