Rebecca (Becky) Crews Pickett of Decatur, GA passed on to the Lord after a two year battle with cancer on Thursday August 14, 2014. She is survived by her husband Jeffrey Pickett, children Jennifer Pickett Holt (Tom) of Griffin, GA and Brian Pickett (Kelly) of Tyrone, GA. She is also survived by six beautiful grandchildren: Caroline Holt Aiken (Thomas) of Macon, GA, Katherine Holt of Atlanta, George Holt, Abbey Pickett, John (Jack) Pickett, and Hunter Pickett. Becky was the daughter of George W. and Virginia McNeny Crews whose roots were in south-central Virginia. Her father was a railroad-man with the Southern Railroad, and he was serving in North Africa when Becky was born on April 24, 1943 in Washington, DC. Becky was nearly three years old when her father returned from the war seeing her for the first time. A railroad career moved the family through the South until high school years in Charlotte, NC. She was a leader and a scholar at East Mecklenburg High School, and she won entrance to Duke University. She and Jeff were chemistry lab partners in high school, and they had their first date soon after they both started college. Becky was an outstanding student, and she graduated with a degree in English with honors. Becky and Jeff were married September 12, 1964, and they began life together in Chapel Hill, NC as Jeff finished college. Duty in the US Marine Corps took Jeff and Becky to Pensacola, FL and Jacksonville, NC. By the time Jeff left for Vietnam in 1967 Jennifer had been born and Brian was on the way. Becky gave birth to Brian in 1967, and she had to care for two small children until Jeff returned home the following year. The family then moved to Meridian, MS to conclude their military service. The Atlanta area became Becky's home from 1969 to the present. Becky completed course work for her degree at Agnes Scott College earning straight A grades. She became a Master Gardener and was the President of the Georgia Master Gardeners Association in 2000. She raised her two terrific children often in the absence of Jeff who traveled extensively. Becky was the hostess of numerous Pickett gatherings, and she continued to have dreams of having to cook countless meals for days on end. Those gatherings, though, cemented a whole generation of our widely separated family. She became the best friend of Jeff's mother who, when widowed, moved to Atlanta bringing Jeff's grandmother along. She cared for both until their deaths. She was so good at this that she cared for Jeff's widower uncle for three years until his death. The Uncle John Years were memorable. Becky's parents also moved to the Atlanta area and she continued to care for them over the years. Her mother, Virginia Crews is alive today and mourns Becky's death with all of us. Becky became a grandmother in 1989 and was a role model and educator of manners to all. She was called Gecky by the children, and the term Gecky-tize became a synonym for order and neatness. Jeff loved her deeply. She was his center, his orbital point, and his guiding beacon. We will all miss her. Services for Becky will be held on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at 1:30 PM at All Saints Episcopal Church, 634 West Peachtree St. NW, Atlanta, GA. A reception will follow in Ellis Hall at the church. A private burial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society or All Saints Church would be appreciated.
