Rev. Dan L. Garrett, 62, of Marietta, GA passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 26, 2012. Dan was born on January 8, 1950 in Nashville, TN to the late M. Lynn Garrett and Gladys Simmons Garrett. He grew up in the Donelson community where he enjoyed working with his father at the family drug store and attending Andrew Price Memorial United Methodist Church. Dan graduated in 1968 from Two Rivers High School and went on to attend Cumberland College and then Middle Tennessee State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. Dan served in the Tennessee National Guard in several capacities, including Chaplain's Assistant. He received a call to ministry and became a local pastor in the United Methodist Church, serving as a pastor and on staff in several churches in Tennessee and Georgia. He also served as a campus minister at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN. Later, Dan served as an interim pastor for United Church of Christ congregations in Georgia and Alabama. He earned his Master of Divinity degree from Memphis Theological Seminary and was ordained in the United Church of Christ. For the last 9 years Dan worked for Grady Healthsystem as the Staff Chaplain for the Infectious Disease Program. Dan was known and dearly loved for his low key demeanor, gentleness, kindness, grace and humor. He was a loving son, husband and father, and quite a cook. He will be missed beyond measure. He is survived by his mother, Gladys S. Garrett of Donelson, TN, his wife of 25 years, Rev. Dana Overton-Garrett of Marietta, his daughter and son-in-law Kelly and Christopher Bullington of Richlands, NC, daughter Katelynn Garrett of Marietta, brother and sister-in-law Douglas and Nancy Garrett, Englewood, CO a nephew and cousins. A memorial service celebrating his life to the glory of God will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2012 at Central Congregational United Church of Christ, 2676 Clairmont Rd., Atlanta, GA 30329. A reception will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Villa International, 1749 Clifton Rd., Atlanta, GA 30329.
