One in a million! Richard Alton Porter born May 31, 1958 passed at home on Monday June 1, 2015. Rick grew up in Dunwoody, GA and for the past 32 years lived in the same house with his partner, Jerry Bright in Virginia Highland. Rick was pre-deceased by his parents Lennell and Richard Porter, Sr. and his sweet sister, Diane Richards. Rick was a neighborhood volunteer and for 10 years served as Construction Project Manager and a Board Member in the creation of John Howell Park from its' inception to completion receiving many civic awards for his vision from Congressman John Lewis, the City of Atlanta, neighborhood organizations and others. On January 12, 1995 Rick received an award for Outstanding Community Service from The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc. Captivated by art in all its' forms Rick enjoyed painting and creating a unique three dimensional acrylic paint art form. In 1996 Rick carried the Olympic flag and Jerry carried the torch down Highland Avenue. In their years together Rick and Jerry were blessed to travel, especially to their favorite spots in the Caribbean and worked side by side in the renovation of their home and gardens. Rick was loved and will be missed by Jerry, his beloved dog Scout, the Bright and Ordaz families in Centennial, CO, Peoria, IL, Dallas, TX, and Nashville, TN, the Richards family in Bald Knob, AK and many other family members, life-long friends and neighbors. There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Elton John Plaza in John Howell Park located at 780 Virginia Ave NE. Family and friends will gather at 808 Ponce de Leon Terrace NE immediately following the service.
