Richard C. "Dick" Schlagheck, 78, of Atlanta, passed away 2/24/15. Dick, born 11/9/36 in Toledo, Ohio, was a proud and long-term employee of Columbia Gas. From welder to district management positions, his career took him to Columbus, Ohio; Huron, Ohio; and Norfolk, Virginia. Following a period of retirement in Florida, Dick relocated to Atlanta for his final years, where a courageous long-term battle with cancer, which started with breast cancer, was finally lost. A giving person and a loving soul, Dick remained as positive as he always was, even in his final days, showing two thumbs up whenever he was asked how he was feeling. Dick is survived by his wife, the love of his life for more than 55 years, Jane G. (Stith) Schlagheck. In addition, he leaves behind oldest son, Michael and wife, Cheryl, of Atlanta. Michael and his wife were dedicated to Dick's care, and continue to provide for Jane. Dick is also survived by daughter, Nancy Schlagheck, Panama City, Fl.; and sons, David, New York City; Karl, Chicago; and Steven, Cleveland, and two grandsons, Erik and Tyler. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Howard and Marie Schlagheck of Toledo; along with brothers Francis and Jerry; and sisters Rita Baur and Jeanne Horen. Surviving siblings include sister Genny Koberstein, and brothers Fr. Regis (Tom) Schlagheck, Paul, Ray and Bill. The Prayer of St. Francis was among his favorites: "Make me a channel of your peace...grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console." We wish him peace. A private memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University in Atlanta: https://winshipcancer.emory.edu/support-winship/give/.
