Native Atlantan, Richard Henry Rice, died Monday, July 12, 2010 after a brief but valiant battle against an aggressive form of cancer. He would be 82 in September. Having grown up in Little Five Points with pins in a map while he tended his WW II victory garden, collected metal and guided a horse-drawn bakery delivery wagon on its weekly routes. After graduating from Boys High in 1946, Mr. Rice obtained his degree from the University of Georgia while working at the Marietta Street Federal Reserve and C&S National Bank (now Bank of America. After his tour of duty in Korea, he returned to Atlanta and resumed working for C&S Bank. His career at the bank spanned more than 35 years, starting in the mail room and ending as Vice President in the Trust Department. After retiring he continued his affiliation with the National Trust Real Estate Association. Richard, Bub, Uncle Dick and Dad was an extremely capable, caring and compassionate man. His intelligence, duty and humor helped his extended family through many a difficult time and provided the joy, light and whimsy appropriate to times of celebration. He was many things to our family; serving as groomsman, executor, advisor and friend. An avid golfer, Richard was a founding member of the Pea Ridge Golf Association, and continued to play with his "gang of four" and Boy's High Alums until late 2009. A camper, hiker and general traveler, he led many trips with his family across the US and Europe. He is survived by his wife, Denise Guerin Rice; his son, Bryant; daughter, Susan and her husband Tom Deal; daughter, Anne and her husband John Clever and their children David and Faye. His family, many friends, colleagues and former co-workers mourn his loss. Services will be at Clairmont Presbyterian Church in Decatur July 24 at 10 am. A private burial service was held earlier at Westview Cemetery In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Rice can be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
