Robert Hutchings Carter

Robert Hutchings Carter passed away at the age of 95, on July 21, 2017. He was born in Boston, MA on July 17, 1922, and graduated from Dedham High School in 1940. He went to Northeastern University on a track scholarship, which was interrupted by his enlistment into the Army. He was in the 464th Parachute Battalion of the 17th Airborne Division. He made 36 jumps, 1 in combat during Operation Varsity on March 24, 1945. The battle was the largest airborne operation in history to be conducted on a single day and in one location, Wesel, Germany. The operation was the last large scale allied airborne operation of WWII. After the conclusion of WWII, Robert (Bob) completed a Bachelor of Arts in Business, and the Juris Doctor from Northeastern University in Boston, MA. In 1950, Bob married the love of his life, Janet Carroll Northrop. On their honeymoon, they headed south and settled in Decatur, GA. It was in the Atlanta area that they raised their family, and where he owned and operated Vent-A-Hood of Georgia, from 1955 to 2005. Bob was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Janet, his parents, Lawrence and Mary Carter, his two siblings, Lawrence E. Carter and Betty Unger, and his daughter-in-law, Dianne Tendrich-Carter. Bob is survived by his four children: Thomas E. Carter, of Atlanta, Larry E. Carter (Kaye), of Atlanta, Jean Carter Richardson (Steve), of Lilburn, and Janice Carter Callison (Frank), of Spartanburg, SC, his grandchildren: Robert A. Richardson (Ginny) of Decatur, F. Carter Callison of Spartanburg, SC, Diana Price (Fisher) of Beaufort, SC, Thomas M. Richardson (Chelsea), Jackson Carter, and great-grandchild, Avery Joy Richardson. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. The family will receive visitors on Monday, July 24, from 6:00-8:00pm at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, 2773 N. Decatur Road, Decatur.
