Robert (Bob) Lyon Porter, 86, of Decatur, GA went to be with the Lord on Feb 5th, 2010. He was born 2/21/23 in Atlanta, GA, the son of the late Ellen Lyon and Joel Porter. A member of Boys High, Class of 1942, he was a proud graduate of UGA (Education 51’). Robert had a number of careers: Junior Achievement (LaGrange), American Red Cross and owner of Specialty Advertising. Robert was a member of the Greatest Generation, serving as a Master Sergeant in WWII with the 36th Infantry Division. Trained in the Signal Corps at Camp Crowder, MO, he landed in North Africa in 1943, fought across southern France & Germany before ending the war in Kufstein, Austria. In his later years, Robert was active in the WWII Roundtable and honored to make the trip to the WWII Memorial in Washington DC in 2008. An avid photographer, he made thousands of photos and won numerous awards with local Camera Clubs. He didn’t discover his true passion until he was in his 50s – running. A daily runner, he was a local notable thruout Emory-Toco Hills. A devout Christian & a member of Clairmont Hills Baptist Church, Robert displayed his faith outwardly. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Olson Porter (Decatur), his sons Ted Porter (Emerson, GA) and Kent Porter (Shreveport, LA); four grandchildren Kim Harvey, Clint Porter, Ellen and Carleen Porter and one great grandchild: Ashley Harvey. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joel C. Porter. The family will receive friends at 10:00 AM followed by the service at 11:00 AM Thursday, February 11th in the chapel of A.S. Turner Funeral Home, Decatur, GA. Followed by Honor Guard & Interment at the Georgia National Cemetery (Canton).
