Robert M Penland, Jr.

Robert Moore Penland, Jr. died on October 13, 2015. He was born on January 25, 1917 in Woodbury, Georgia, and was the son of Robert Moore Penland and Mattie Lovett Penland.

He grew up in Lakeland, Georgia and Macon, Georgia where he graduated from Sidney Lanier High School. Mr. Penland attended Mercer University and graduated from what is now Georgia State University.

Upon his graduation from college, Mr. Penland began his work with the State Highway Department of Georgia in the Planning Division of that department. His work with the Highway Department was interrupted by his service in the United States Army during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Mr. Penland returned to the Highway Department where he worked until his retirement as Director of Statistics of the Planning Division of the State Highway Department of Georgia.

On October 18, 1941, Mr. Penland married Emily Johnston and was happily married to her for more than sixty-one years, until her death in January of 2003. They had a wonderful marriage and a loving family.

Mr. Penland was a highly intelligent man who enjoyed fishing in the North Georgia mountains and traveled extensively with his wife, Emily. He had a beautiful singing voice and sang as a soloist in the Mercer Glee Club. Mr. Penland also sang at various activities at Wesley Woods of Newnan where he spent the last two and one-half years of his life. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Decatur, Georgia, and lived in Decatur until he became a resident of Wesley Woods of Newnan.

Mr. Penland is survived by his three children, Gail Penland Tucker of Alma, Georgia, Susan Penland Lee of Newnan, Georgia, and Robert Moore Penland, III of Watkinsville, Georgia, his seven grandchildren, James Ray Tucker, Jr., Kate Tucker Brigman, Meg Tucker Fickling, Emily Lee Dean, Parky Lee Rogers, Rob Penland, Carlye Panland, and eleven great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 16, 2015, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at A. S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home, 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur, Georgia. A graveside service will be held at the Decatur Cemetery, 299 Bell Street, Decatur, Georgia at 1:00 p.m. following the visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
