Robert M. Spooner ( Bob ) was born on October 27, 1921 in Quincy, Florida. Mr. Spooner served with the US Army from 1942-1945. He was part of the 116th Infantry, 29th Division and was in the first wave of the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. Mr. Spooner earned seven military decorations and citations, including a Purple Heart. The government of France also appointed him a "Chevalier" in the Legion of Honor for his decisive role in the liberation of France. After the war Mr. Spooner stopped in Atlanta before returning to Florida. At that time he met his future wife, Heidi Standard who was in nursing school. They were married in 1946. Mrs. Spooner passed away in 1997 after 50 years of marriage. Mr. Spooner began work with the L.S. Brown Company in 1945. In 1956 he became Manager of Georgia Tent and Awning which was a subsidiary of L.S. Brown. In 1985 Mr. Spooner, his son, Kenneth and Len Buccellato purchased Georgia Tent and Awning. Mr. Spooner remained as President of the company until 1992. After retirement he remained active on the Board of Directors serving as Chairman. His son, Kenneth became President of the company after Mr. Spooner retired. Mr. Spooner was active in the Baptist Church for more than 70 years. He has served at local, associational, and state levels. Mr. Spooner was ordained a Deacon in the Kirkwood Baptist Church in November 14, 1948. He gave many years of service to Rainbow Park Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Tucker serving as Deacon and very active in Sunday School and Senior Adult Ministries. In addition to his church activities, Mr. Spooner filled many leadership positions in both civic and regional and national professional organizations including the Southern Canvas Association. He was appointed Lieutenant Colonel, Aide de Camp, Governor's Staff under the administration of Joe Frank Harris. Mr. Spooner was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his daughter, Dianne and Mark Cooper of Houston, Texas and their 5 children and 6 grandchildren and by his son, Ken Spooner and Len Buccellato of Atlanta. He is also survived by his wife, Kathleen Singleton whom he married in 2001. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Tucker, Senior Adult Ministry "NTO". Funeral services will be on Thursday November 5, 2015 at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church Tucker with Dr. Dan Parker and Rev. Philip Nall officiating, interment will follow at Floral Hills Memory Garden. The family will be receive friends on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm and from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
