He served in Marine Night Fighter Squadron VMF(N)-534 and saw action in the Pacific. While in the Marines, he became a member of the Caterpillar Club as a result of his having parachuted from a disabled aircraft and having his life saved by a parachute. He was a "Double Cat" due to his having had to bailout twice. The second time was over the Pacific Ocean due to battle damage. He floated in his life jacket for 2 days until he was found and rescued by a search plane. He was Honorably Discharged in 1946 as a Sgt. During his service he met the love of his life, Christine Smith, here in Atlanta. When he came home they were married in 1946. The marriage lasted 53 and 1/2 yrs until her death in 2000. He went to work for Ga. Power Co. in 1946 as a hole digger. He advanced through the ranks to lineman, foreman, and was promoted to Safety Engineer in 1967. He retired as a Senior Safety Engineer after 40 years of service. He was then hired by Dillard Smith Co. as their Senior Safety Engineer where he put in several more years teaching workers the safe ways to work with electricity. He was highly respected by those he worked with because they knew he had gained his knowledge of safe working through having done all the jobs himself and faced the dangers each job held. Bob loved to play golf and played each week with friends from his Sunday School class until his illness. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Tucker and active in his Wesley Fellowship class. Bob was a former member of Clarkston United Methodist Church.
