Robert Scott Prather Sr., 92, died on November 26, 2011 after several months of declining health. Bob was a devout Christian who always put God first in his life. He was born in Lithonia, GA, on December 18, 1918, and graduated from Lithonia High School where he played basketball, baseball and was on the track team. He was the state champion for the 100-yard dash, with a time of 10.2 seconds. After graduating, he worked in the records room at Grady Hospital. During this time he joined the Georgia National Guard as a medic for a field artillery unit. That unit then became activated during WWII, and Bob later went across Europe with the 945th Field Artillery Battalion under General Patton. He received a Bronze Star for meritorious service after saving a fellow soldier's life. When the war was over, he returned to Georgia to his wife and son. He worked several positions for the federal government and ended his career at Fort MacPherson in 1977. He also retired from the Georgia National Guard, where he attained the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He remained active in retirement by working for more than 23 years as treasurer of Midway Presbyterian Church, where he had been a member since 1945. He also planted a huge vegetable garden each spring, and he froze some of the vegetables to enjoy each winter. He generously shared his crops with friends and family members. Bob spent his life doing good for others. If he saw a way that he could help someone, he always would. He was very humble and shunned recognition for his good deeds, since he was only doing what God expected of him. His life was an example of the way God wants us all to live. Bob was preceded in death by first wife Martha Hudgins Prather and sister Harriet Prather Taylor, and is survived by second wife, Betty Williams Prather, sister Ruth Prather Taylor, sons Robert Scott Prather Jr., James Emory Prather and wife Joy, Stanley Lee Prather and wife Holly, stepson Joe Williams, grandsons Robert Scott Prather III, Randall Stephen Prather, Drew Prather, granddaughter Kelly Prather, three great-granddaughters and one great-grandson. The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Scott Chapel of Decatur Presbyterian Church, Decatur, GA with Rev. Joy Fisher and Rev. Ken Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in Midway Presbyterian Church cemetery, Decatur, GA. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at A.S. Turner and Sons Funeral Home in Decatur, GA.
