On November 14, 2019, Rosalind Denise Lewis, our mother, grandmother, sister, niece, aunt, cousin, neighbor, boss, and friend, joined her mother, Barbara A. Huff, father, Edward “Eddie” Lewis II, grandson, Hassan B. King, and many other beloved family members and friends in heaven. Rosalind a.k.a. Roz, the eldest child of Barbara and Eddie’s 4 children, Rosalind, Sandra, Edward, and Marvin, and Eddie and Ms. Dot’s 7 children, Cynthia, Paul, Marlon, Joslyn, Karen, Pam, and Lori, was born on March 12, 1953 in Cleveland, Ohio. After living most of her life in her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, having her 2 daughters there, and moving to California then back to Cleveland, Rosalind followed her mother for their last move to Stone Mountain, Georgia in the early 90s. Rosalind remained in Stone Mountain until her passing. Here in DeKalb County, Roz continued to grow her family, a decision that ultimately lead to 25 plus years of helping the most vulnerable among us.
Rosalind dedicated her life to people in need, working with mentally and physically disabled children and adults, then as a foster parent for hundreds of needy children in DeKalb County, and lastly by founding and running My Granny’s House, Inc., a not for profit group home in DeKalb County. Rosalind devoted countless days and nights ensuring that the children of this county were safe and cared for. Even after being diagnosed with ALS, Rosalind continued to run her business, her baby, until her health would no longer allow her to do so. But, for those who knew her, you knew that Rosalind’s giving spirit extended far beyond what was required by her work. Roz was always known to allow a friend, relative, or stranger to crash in her home or to provide them with a job. Her doors were never locked (a fact that both of her daughters often fussed at her about) and her home was always open to anyone who needed a helping hand.
Still here to celebrate and carry on the legacy of Roz’s 66 years are her daughters, Sylvia and Sybil, her son, SirDarius, her children through life experiences, Joseph and Monique Roebuck, her grandchildren, Briana, Demetrius, Keondre, Omarion and Kayden, all of her sisters and brothers, her great aunts, Helen and Freida, her great uncle, Gerald, her nieces, nephews, many cousins, and numerous other family members, friends, and strangers. Yes, strangers, because if you met Roz, you know that she spent most of her life turning complete strangers into cherished family.
Roz didn’t have much but whatever she had was yours and whatever else you needed, she would find a way to provide. Rosalind was strong, an amazing mother and father to her children and everyone else’s children alike.
So, as you think about Rosalind, through the sorrow you may be feeling, we ask that you remember all the lives she touched, all the friends she helped, all the laughs she caused, all the children she loved in the short time we had her here with us and be comforted in what we all know she believed and often decreed, ALL IS WELL. ALL IS WELL our beloved Rosalind.
