ROSE MARIE (SCHREIBER) CALKINS, 95, passed away March 5, 2012, after a short illness. Her youngest son and companion, Tim, was by her side. She was born in Ghent, Minnesota, February 22, 1917, in a family of three sisters and two brothers. She grew up in Ghent and Marshall. She graduated from the College of Saint Catherine in St. Paul. She afterwards moved to South Bend, Indiana, where she worked as secretary to the President of Notre Dame. There she met her future husband, Francis J. Calkins, a Professor of Corporate Finance. They married and lived in Milwaukee, where Frank taught at Marquette. There they had three sons and a daughter. After some years they moved to Cleveland where Frank taught at Case Western Reserve. They moved to Atlanta in 1978, where Frank taught at Emory. Rose was always active in Frank's work, assisting him in countless ways, and always deeply involved in the world of her church and her children. Rose was an active member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, a keen bridge player, and a faithful, enthusiastic member of Creative Hands. In her youth she was a designer and maker of fine ladies' hats, and throughout her life she made beautiful, sturdy clothing for her family and friends. She was a celebrated cook. She enjoyed travel and adventure, and was still going on camping trips with her sons well into her 80s. She and Tim maintained a beautiful garden, and she was a great friend and protector of the birds who came there year round, cardinals in particular. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward & Julia, her husband Frank, her brothers Joseph and Alfred, her sisters Grace and Alice, and their husbands, Earl Krusemark and Pat Rogers. She is survived by her children, Edward Calkins (Chicago), Richard Calkins (M. Teresa, N. Ft. Myers), Dr. Annie Calkins, (Dave Hunsaker, Juneau, Alaska), Timothy Calkins (Atlanta), and grandson Alex Calkins (Juneau), and by numerous nieces and nephews, numbering to three generations. A funeral mass will be held Friday March 9 at 11:00 am, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, with graveside services to follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from on Thursday 5:00 to 7:00 pm at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
