Roy Dyer was born on November 8, 1931, the son of Marie Porter Lackland and Roy E. Dyer, Sr. He grew up in the southwest area of Atlanta. He graduated from Russell High School in 1948, Darlington School in 1950 and Jacksonville State College in 1954.
He met Helen Dean Young in college. They married in August of 1954 after graduation.
Roy obtained a commission in the US Army in Field Artillery and after almost two years in service obtained the rank of First Lieutenant. During the above period of time, he and Helen were blessed with their first son, Roy Eugene Dyer, III.
After leaving the service, Roy was offered an engineering job with Southern Bell Telephone Company in 1955. Three years later in 1958, Roy and Helen were again blessed with their second son, Thomas Young Dyer. Roy was with Southern Bell, BellSouth, and ATandT for 35 years. He retired in 1991.
Roy lost his wife Helen in February of 2011. Two years later his oldest son, Roy Dyer III passed away in September of 2013. His later years were spent at his home in Snellville, Georgia. Roy's son, Tom, his wife, Dedra and their son Luke were invaluable assets in his later life.
Roy was a member of the Masonic Lodge #99 in Snellville, Georgia. He was also a Scottish Rite 32 degree Free Mason. He was a member of the Holy Cross Anglican Church in Loganville, Ga.
