Ruth Davis Lane was born Aug. 16, 1923 in Knoxville, TN, one of six children of Nettie and Clifford Davis. She died from heart problems on Feb. 24, 2012 at Hospice Atlanta. In 2008 she was diagnosed by written test to have Alzheimer's disease. On June 19, 1948 she married John Paul Lane, a veteran. She graduated from Central High School in Chattanooga, TN and attended business school there. Survivors include husband, John Paul Lane; daughter, Alda Rose Lane; sons, Dr. John Davis Lane (Mary Hodapp), and Stephen Lane (Carol Mohr); grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Ryan, Jessie and Isabel. She received an associate degree from DeKalb Perimeter College several years after her three children graduated from college. Some employment as a secretary was at Olin-Mathewson, Chemstrand, Manhattan Project, AEC, TVA and CDC. She was a skilled typist, user of shorthand, and able to type multiple carbon copies. Ruth's Employment on the Manhattan Project, the name of the American atomic bomb project, was in secret source and fission able materials. Duties were at Oak Ridge, TN and Washington, DC. Ruth was one of the typists for the Smythe Report, which revealed the atomic bomb project to the global public. Travel orders for the high level officials sometimes used aliases. Her experience noted that General Leslie Groves, son of an Army chaplain, tolerated no vulgar talk in his office as project director. The Lane family is grateful for the dedicated staffs at Emory and Piedmont Hospitals. Ruth was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, and a member of The Wesley Companions Sunday School Class. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM on March 1, 2012 in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons, conducted by Rev. James Sanders. Burial at Georgia National Veteran's Cemetery, Canton, GA. The family will receive friends on Feb. 29, 2012 from 6 to 8 PM at A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory.
