Ruth Rhodes Whatley

January 10, 1918 — March 5, 2007

Mrs. Ruth Rhodes Whatley, of Alpharetta, went home to be with her Lord on March 5, 2007. She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, W.A. Whatley. She is survived by her daughter, Becky Whatley Lewis, and son-in-law, Ed Lewis, of Alpharetta; grandsons, Dr. Gary and Krissy Lewis of McDonough, Brent and Bazlyn Lewis of Cumming, and Rev. Kent and Jennifer Lewis of Wilmington, North Carolina; 3 beloved great-grandchildren, Graham and Harper Lewis of McDonough and Kenlee Lewis of Wilmington; sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette and Walter Smith of College Park; brother-in-law, Frank Gossett of Griffin; and sister-in-law, Mary Rhodes of Loganville, along with many other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Whatley retired from Grady Hospital in 1969 where she served in the emergency room for a decade. She was known for being an avid reader, having unfailing love for her family and friends, and sharing her talents as a seamstress. She was very active, as a believer in Jesus Christ, at Kirkwood Baptist church, Atlanta Rainbow Park Baptist Church, Decatur, and in the Atlanta Baptist Association, where she served in a wide array of ministries. Above all, Mrs. Whatley was known for her devoted love for her Lord, her ready smile, and her willingness to serve all of her family and friends she loved so much. There is joy in heaven today because she is finally home with her Lord and all of her loved ones that preceded her there. Her funeral will take place in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, 2773 North Decatur Rd., Decatur, GA at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7th. Her three grandsons will officiate. Burial will follow in Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs. Due to the fact that Mrs. Whatley recently joined Sharon Baptist Church, McDonough, GA, her family requests that those that wish to make a donation in her memory to do so to the Sharon Baptist Church Building Fund, 536 North Ola Rd., McDonough, GA 30252. The viewing will be on Tuesday, March 6th from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at A. S. Turner & Sons.
