Ruth Russell Smith, 90, of Decatur, wife, mother and grandma, passed away on Monday February 1st, 2016. Born August 15, 1925 in Sanford, NC, she was the oldest daughter of the late Charles Henry and Margaret Yarbrough Russell. She attended Jonesboro High School (class of 1943) and Roger's Business School. She met her husband Gene at a USO dance and they married in 1944. Ruth spent her career as a secretary at WIFM in Elkin, NC and retired from the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing at Emory. She was made an honorary alumna of the school and the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, her sister, Rachel and brother in law, Connie Caviness. Ruth is survived by her sons, John Michael & Steven (Judith); grandchildren, Susan Smith, Russell Smith, Brooks Young (Jen), Scott Young (Jana); great-granddaughters, Hannah, Emma and Isabella; great-grandson, Zachary and many family and friends. A celebration of Ruth's life will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday February 6th at Emory Presbyterian Church and later she will rest with her husband, Gene at the National Veterans Cemetery in Salisbury, NC.
