Samuel Henry Carr of Tucker, Georgia, died peacefully Tuesday morning, September 2 at Budd Terrace/Wesley Woods, following a lengthy illness. He was born in Buffalo, New York where he graduated from the University of Buffalo with a degree in education. Graduate study followed at Penn State. Sam became director of Vocational Education in the New York School Systems. After retiring in 1991, he and his family moved to Georgia where he taught at Gordon, McNair and Peachtree High Schools. He was active in his church, community affairs and was an avid artist, creating carved symbols of nature from wood. He also retired as a major in the US Army in 1976.Sam was a Mason Emeritus and member of the Masters Lodge No. 295 in Tucker and well as the Briarcliff Chapter of AARP. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Toomey Carr, and his only son, James Edward Carr. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Mrs. Eleanor Lillian Miller Carr and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held in the chapel of A.S. Turner and Sons, Friday, September 5, 2008 at 11 o’clock in the morning. Rev. Jeremy Lawson of Briarlake United Methodist Church will officiate. A private burial service will follow at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Sam’s memory to your favorite charity. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 10:55 a.m. at A.S Turner & Sons.
