Samuel Lawton Haygood

April 10, 1985 — January 14, 2011

Samuel Lawton Haygood, age 25, of Decatur died Friday, January 14, 2011. He graduated from Auburn University in 2008 and was a member of FarmHouse Fraternity and the Auburn Cycling Team. Sam was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens. He is survived by his wife of two and half years, Abby Johnson Haygood: parents, Daniel and Cindy Haygood of Watkinsville; sister, Caitlin Haygood of Watkinsville; grandparents Evelyn and Joe Harney and Ruth and Dan Haygood; great grandmother, Nannie C. Haygood; mother and father-in-law, Dottie and Dave Johnson and brother-in-law Bert Johnson. Sam was an avid sportsman enjoying triathlons, golf, cycling, the beach, and running with his dad and his many friends. He waged a 4 year battle with Ewing's sarcoma. Sam's brought courage, grace, humor, tenacity and love for those around him to his fight. No one who fought this battle with him will ever forget him. The family wishes to thank the medical team and Sam's many caregivers. A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 3:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Athens with Dr. William Ross and Dr. Paul Baxley officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers donations should be sent to : Amschwand Sarcoma Foundation, or Cure Childhood Cancer.org.
