Sarah Crewe Hamilton Leathers

Sarah Crewe Hamilton Leathers, 82, of Kearneysville, WV, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother died Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at the Hospice of the Panhandle Inpatient Facility, Kearneysville, WV. She was born November 21, 1932 in Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, GA. She was the daughter of the late Clarence W. Hamilton and Leone Bowers Hamilton. She leaves behind her devoted husband of nearly 60 years, James Charles Leathers and two children, Susan Adair (Leathers) Mitchell and husband Robert of North Potomac, MD, and James Crewe Leathers of Rock Hill, SC; grandchildren, Katie Beth Tinker and husband Ryan, and Laura Ann Leathers; brother, William A. Hamilton and wife Nan, Atlanta, GA; and a niece and several nephews. Mrs. Leathers graduated from Decatur Girls High School, class of 1949 and graduated with a Mathematics degree from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA, class of 1953. Prior to starting a family she worked for Tennessee Valley Authority, the Army Corp of Engineers, and a civil engineering firm as a cartographic drafter. She helped map what became Lake Lanier north of Atlanta, GA. She actively volunteered during her children's early years including leading Scout troops, serving on the PTA, teaching swimming lessons, substitute teaching, and lending her artistic talents to newsletters, program covers, local arts councils, and other organizations in which she participated. She was a lifelong Presbyterian and over the years served as Youth Group leader, bible school teacher, and was active in Women of the Church at Mulberry Presbyterian in Charlotte, NC, later at St. Andrews Presbyterian in Winston-Salem, NC, and more recently at Covenant Presbyterian in Charlotte, NC. She was an associate member of the Charles Town Presbyterian Church. As an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution she was Treasurer and twice served as Regent of the Liberty Hall Chapter, DAR in Charlotte, NC; was an Associate member of the Beeline Chapter, DAR in Charles Town, WV; served as Corresponding Secretary for the North Carolina State DAR; and enjoyed attending the Continental Congresses for many years in Washington, DC. Since her husband's retirement, she divided her time between their Charlotte, NC home and their family farm, "Elmwood on the Opequon", near Charles Town, WV. She was crazy about her cats, enjoyed traveling, reading, arts and crafts, and researching the Leathers' ancestry. A Memorial Service will be held at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, NC on May 18 at 2:00 p.m. with the Reverend Petra Wahnefried officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service. A graveside service for family and interment will be at Decatur Cemetery, Decatur, GA. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Sarah Hamilton Leathers '53 and Leone Bowers Hamilton '26 Arts Lecture Series Fund at Agnes Scott College, Office of Development, 141 E.
