Sarah Geneva Thompson McCall, age 92, of Greensboro, GA, passed away on Monday, May 10, 2010. Born July 8, 1917, to Melvin and Susan Byrd Thompson, Sarah lived most of her life in metro Atlanta before moving to Greensboro in 2002. She graduated in 1935 from Commercial High School where she played baseball, basketball, and tennis. A gifted athlete, she continued to play baseball with Atlanta women’s teams throughout the 1930’s. In 1937, she married the love of her life, Zetus H. “Mac” McCall. During WWII she served her country in a high-security civilian job, responsible for shipping critical supplies to American soldiers. At the end of the war, Sarah and her husband bought a farm in North Georgia, and she became adept at driving a tractor, growing crops, and raising chickens. After their move back to Atlanta in 1953, she began work as a junior accountant for General Motors, Fisher Body division. She retired from General Motors in 1976 and increased her involvement at Mountain Park United Methodist Church and in several community organizations. She became an avid traveler and an oil and watercolor artist. At age 83, she supervised the building of her Lake Oconee home. Sarah was often described as “a grand Southern lady” and “an amazing woman.” Sarah was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five siblings, and one son-in-law, Gordon Lackey. She is survived by two daughters, Sheila Lackey of Greensboro, GA, and Sandra Rosseter and husband Tom of Eatonton, GA; four grandchildren: Julie Rosseter Sweeney and husband Pat of Suwanee, GA, Amanda Rosseter Schab and husband Joe of Atlanta, GA, Jennifer Lackey Barber and husband Glen of Woodstock, GA, and Tommy Lackey and wife Jennifer of Atlanta, GA; eight great-grandchildren, and dozens of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 14, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of A.S. Turner & Sons in Decatur, GA. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at A. S. Turner & Sons.
