Mrs. Sophie P. Kanes, loving wife, aunt, and godmother passed into eternal life to join her beloved husband John in the Kingdom of Heaven on Friday, October 29, 2010. She was the second eldest of eight siblings born to the late George and Irene Pefines in Nedousa, Greece. She was the first of her family to immigrate to the United States arriving in 1939. She and her husband, John were responsible for sponsoring several family members to the United States. She was a proud Greek American with a strong faith in God. Mrs. Kanes was a long time employee of Empire Manufacturing Company. All who knew her will always love her for her colorful character and her feisty spirit. She was preceded in death by her siblings, Pete Pefines, Theodore Pefines, Besse Strepelis, Voula Kakunes, Smini Pefines, Stahoola Pefines and her niece Irene Soublis. She is survived by her sister, Joanna Poolos; five nephews, George N. Poolos, Ted N. Poolos, George P. Pefines, James N. Kakunes, George N. Kakunes; and several god children. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation with Father Christos Mars officiating. Interment, Greenwood Cemetery, Atlanta, GA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation, 2500 Clairmont Rd., NE, Atlanta, GA 30329. The family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at A. S. Turner & Sons.
