Stephen Harrison Southerland, age 86, of Tucker, Georgia passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at Emory Decatur Hospital.
Stephen was born on June 15, 1936 in Alabama City, Alabama to the late Benjamin and Jewel Southerland. He spent most of his early years in Chester, South Carolina. Stephen served in the military for twenty years between the Army and Air Force. Upon being honorably discharged, he worked as an electronic technician for BellSouth for 30 years before retiring.
Stephen married Lorraine McCranie on July 2, 1971. Stephen and Lorraine enjoyed 51 years of marriage, during which they lived in Albany, Georgia, Columbia, South Carolina, and Metro Atlanta.
Stephen was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was an amatuer ham radio operator and enjoyed fishing, country music, and the Atlanta Braves. Above all, he relished spending time with his family.
Stephen is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine, and his two daughters Stephannie Churchwell of Sylvester, Georgia, and Amy Freed of Atlanta, Georgia. He is also survived by his grandchildren Kristie Brumbley of Sylvester, Georgia, and Alexia Freed and Eloise Freed of Atlanta, Georgia; his great-grandchildren, Brooke Brumbley, Devin Brumbley, and Remington Brumbley of Sylvester, Georgia, and; his siblings Bonnie Shore of Decatur, Georgia, Jewel Southerland of Lexington, South Carolina, Jackie Hallman of Fort Mill, South Carolina, Connie Taylor of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and Dennis Southerland of Chester, South Carolina.
The family will host a memorial service at A.S. Turner & Sons funeral home in Decatur, Georgia, at 2:00 p.m. on October 7, 2022. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1:00 p.m.
