Susan Snow Hope

July 12, 1946 — April 23, 2017

Susan Snow Hope, 70, of Stone Mountain, GA, passed away on April 23, 2017 after a brave battle with cancer. She was born on July 12, 1946 in Athens, GA, the daughter of the late Col. Asbury Dewey Snow and Ruth Sweeney Snow.

She will be remembered as a devoted wife for 46 years to Bob, daughter-in-law of Dorothy Young Hope, mother to Betsy Hope Skarecky and her husband, Tod, and Clair Hope Wallace and her husband, Chad, and a beloved grandmother to Henry, Clair, Lucy and Nate; as well as an adored sister of Major Snow, and his wife, Sandra, Julia Snow Morell and her husband, Glenn, Mary Alice Snow Webb and her husband, Michael, and Ruthy Snow Stephens and her husband, Donald, and aunt to many nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by countless numbers of extended family and lifelong friends.

Susan attended Athens High School and the University of Georgia, where she was a recreation major, then moved to Atlanta and worked for the Decatur and DeKalb County recreation departments. She was one of the founders of Georgia Special Olympics at age 30.

She grew up going to Georgia Football, Basketball, and Baseball Games with her daddy and was a lifelong Bulldog! She was a Braves and Hawks fan too. She was an avid volunteer, gardener, seamstress and loved shopping, ladies lunches and getting her nails done with her daughters, sisters and friends.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church her whole life, and embodied its founder John Wesley's words, "Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can." She lived a life of service that has been an inspiration to many through the curtains she sewed for many new homes and babies rooms, to the care packages of of girl scout cookies and candy that she sent to college students to the goodies that she took to all of her nurses each time she went for her chemotherapy treatments for the past two years. Her volunteer projects are too many to name from PTA President, Sunday School Teacher and Youth Counselor as a young mom to more recently volunteering once a week at the International Rescue Committee, providing clothing and guidance to refugees, and helping gather, sort and deliver books for Children Read to give to kids in low income and special needs schools. She was also the 'Silent Auction Queen,' having helped numerous charities with their fundraising efforts.

For her birthday in recent years, Susan would ask for bags of groceries, instead of gifts, to give to local food pantries, most of which were small and got little other support. She collected more than 1,000 bags of groceries with her simple grocery program.

Visitation will be this Friday, April 28, from 5 - 7pm at A.S. Turner Funeral Home in Decatur, GA. The Celebration of Life service will be at 11am on Saturday, April 29, in the sanctuary of the First United Methodist Church of Decatur, GA. Attendees are encouraged to wear Easter Sunday attire and bring a bag of groceries that will be given in her honor to local food pantries.
