Terence Francis Murphy

May 15, 1958 — June 14, 2016

Terry Murphy departed this world peacefully, at his residence, on Tuesday, June 14, 2016, from natural causes attributed to cardio-vascular disease.

Terry was the son of Patrick and Anne Murphy. Born in Paramus, NJ, and raised in Albany, NY, Terry was a 1976 graduate of Guilderland High School, and later a graduate of the Newhouse School of Journalism at Syracuse University.

His journalism career began as a reporter at the Saratogian, a regional newspaper in upstate New York. He soon found his way to New York City, where he joined Fairchild Publications; he worked in writing and editing roles on several magazines—covering fashion, golf, travel and leisure. He served as Editor of Southern Voice in Atlanta, GA in the late 1990s, and concluded his career as editor of several VNU Business Publications.

Terry was a tireless advocate for the Transgender Community—and a founding Board Member of the Southern Comfort Conference. SCC helps advance the understanding and protection of the LGBTQ community. Teri was a prominent out trans-person, a regular contributor and member of IFGE, and other groups focused on advancing the cause of individual dignity, protection and inclusion of all people. In this way, Teri touched the lives of countless individuals world-wide. Over the course of her twenty-five plus years devoted to these causes, the national dialog about LGBTQ rights has expanded to a point that would have been hard to imagine in 1990. Teri was quick with a kind word; a friend to all, and a voice for the marginalized.

Terry, to his own delight, was also a late-in-life father. Charmed by his daughter, Chloe Anne Murphy Symmes, he cherished every moment he shared with her.

Terry was pre-deceased by his mother and father, Anne and Patrick Murphy; sister, Patricia Murphy; brother Kevin Murphy; and nephew Allan Kautz, He is survived by his daughter Chloe Anne Murphy Symmes, of Atlanta, GA; brothers Brian Murphy (Maureen) of Hamden, CT; brother Dennis Murphy of Asheville, NC; brother Michael Murphy (Susan] also of Asheville, NC and their daughter, Margaret Rose. He is also survived by niece Megan Baine (Burton) of Denver, CO, and their daughter, Ava; beloved Aunt and Uncle Margaret and Bill Harrington; dear cousins Meg (Jeff) Levine, Beth (Obie) Harrington-Howes, Susan (Jeff) Hamill, Mary (Ed) Bouton, and Bill (Allison) Harrington, and their extended families.

A memorial celebration of Terry's life will be held in the Greater Atlanta Area in the near future — the date has not been determined at the time of this publication.

All who knew and loved Terry are invited to attend.
