**Teresa Gayle Hooks Smith** **August 22, 1948 - August 14, 2024**
With great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Teresa Gayle Hooks Smith, aged 75, on August 14, 2024, at her home, surrounded by loved ones. Born on August 22, 1948, in Atlanta, GA, to Hazel and George Hooks, Gayle grew up in East Atlanta. She graduated from Gordon High School in 1966 and went on to earn her degree from North Georgia College in 1969, where she met her future husband, Ronald Smith.
As a young Marine Corps family, Gayle and Ron dedicated themselves to serving their country, moving frequently as needed. They had two sons, Matthew and Stephen, whom Gayle devoted her life to raising. She made countless sacrifices to ensure her boys had the skills and values needed to lead happy and successful lives. Gayle made friends everywhere she went, touching the lives of so many.
She was an active member of the Episcopal Church in every community she lived in, attending Cursillo in Pensacola, FL, and serving the church in various capacities throughout her life. Gayle began her teaching career in Virginia Beach and, after obtaining her Master's Degree, returned to Atlanta, where she continued teaching in DeKalb County schools. She retired after many years of spreading her love for learning and life to countless students. Volunteerism was a lifelong passion for Gayle. She was particularly devoted to the Daughters of the King and the Linus Project, where she sewed blankets for first responders to distribute to those in need. She also cherished her time volunteering at the Fox Theatre and the Georgia Aquarium, two of her favorite places in Atlanta.
Gayle is survived by her beloved sister and best friend, Janis Williams; her brother, Byron Hooks; her sons, Matthew and Stephen Smith; and her three cherished grandchildren, Peyton, Iris, and Jasmine Smith. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Gayle's memory to ALS United of Georgia. **ALS United of Georgia** 227 Sandy Springs Place, Suite D, Box #304 Sandy Springs, GA 30328 Website: [www.alsgeorgia.org](http://www.alsgeorgia.org) --- A Memorial service will be held at St. Matthew Episcopal Church 1520 Oak Rd SW, Snellville, GA, on Saturday, August 24th, at 2:00 PM.
