Thomas B. Clark

Thomas B. Clark, Professor Emeritus of Managerial Sciences at Georgia State University died on Monday, March 21, 2011. Tom was born September 8, 1945 to Schuyler and Margaret Clark in Augusta, Georgia. He was a graduate of Richmond Academy, Georgia Tech, and Georgia State University. He was an outstanding student and received many academic and leadership awards, foreshadowing the exceptional accomplishments of his life. He was a member of the Chi Phi Fraternity. Tom graduated first in his class at Tech in Industrial Engineering. He earned an MIE from Tech and a PhD in Management from Georgia State. Following military service with the Army at the Pentagon and work as an industrial engineer with John Harland Company, he joined the faculty of Georgia Tech and four years later moved to Georgia State. Tom retired from Georgia State in 1999. While there he served as Chair of the Managerial Sciences Department and Acting Dean of the Robinson College of Business Administration. Tom received outstanding teaching awards from both Georgia Tech and Georgia State and received recognition for distinguished service to the College in 1993. In 1977 Tom developed the idea that led to the founding of the Atlanta Hospital Hospitality House (AHHH) as an outreach project of All Saints Episcopal Church. Since opening in September 1981, this organization has provided over 100, 000 overnight accommodations to more that 20, 000 people from 49 states and 35 foreign countries. He served as Founding President of AHHH from 1979 through 1982 and Vice President Operations in 1983-1984. In 1985 Clark Cottage on the grounds of AHHH was dedicated to him. In 1984 he received the WXIA-TV 11-Alive Community Service Award and the Jefferson Award in recognition of outstanding public service from the American Institute for Public Service. He was named Volunteer of the Year by the Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross in 2004. He was recognized for his work in the Red Cross 2005 Hurricane Season Relief effort. He was co-founder of YCA (now Project Success, Inc.), a project management training and consulting firm and conducted highly acclaimed project management seminars until his death. He and his wife, Carolyn, were volunteers at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and delivered Meals on Wheels for ten years.Preceded in death by his parents, Schuyler and Margaret Clark and his brother, Schuyler Clark, Jr. he is survived by Carolyn, his wife of 25 years, his daughter Shannon Clark of Charlottesville, VA; his sister-in-law Suzanne Clark of Alpharetta; his nephew Shepherd Clark of Los Angeles, California; his nephew and niece Hal and Catherine Clark and their two children Schuyler and Sarah; an his cousins Sue and Dave Lester of Williamsburg, VA. Services conducted by The Very Reverend Geoffrey M. St. J. Horee will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church Saturday, March 26, 2011 at 1 P.M. Inurnment, followed by a reception will follow immediately after the service at the church.
