Harold Fleming, age 89, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, formerly of Atlanta, Georgia, passed away Friday, November 26, 2010 at his home. Harold was a World War II Navy veteran, serving as a reconnaissance photographer with Squadron L-VD-3. He also served as a waist-gunner with the same squadron on a B-24 Liberator bomber war plane christened "Hound Dog". This same plane was emblazoned with Harold's original artwork - a comical cartoon dog, 'defeating' the enemy. Prior to his serving during the war, he received his photo school training at Naval air stations from Pennsacola to San Diego. Interestingly, a portion of his Naval training included gunning instruction from Robert Stack (later actor). In 1962, he started his own printing company in Atlanta, Fleming Color Service, until he retired many years later to take care of his wife, Frances, who was in declining health. He moved to New Smyrna Beach in 1998, where he pursued his passion for painting historical scenes, as well as other interesting subjects. He truly loved to paint. He will be remembered as a gifted artist, as well as a kind, loving man with a wonderful sense of humor. He was a much devoted husband, father and grandfather and a great role model for his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Frances Eberhart Fleming, and siblings, Homer, Paul and Felton Fleming. Also a sister, Clara, deceased as a child. Survivors include his daughter, Telia Fleming Hanks (Mark), and sons, Terry Fleming (Sylvia), and Timothy Fleming (Cheryl), two granddaughters, Jennifer Fleming Catalan (Ralph) and Emily Fleming, one great grandson, Cody Martin, and several nieces and nephews. In addition, he is survived by his loving companion of the past 6 years, Carolyn Queener. Memorial services will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons, 2773 North Decatur Road, Decatur, Ga. 30033 at 2 pm on Wednesday, December 1. Interment following at Melwood Cemetery, East Ponce de Leon Ave, Stone Mountain, Ga. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, November 30 from 7-9 pm. Flowers welcome, however, memorial contributions may be made to Southeast Volusia County Humane Society, 200 S. Glencoe Road New Smryna Beach, FL 32168. A. S. Turner & Sons
