Thomas Henry Moore, Jr., 97, of Avondale Estates died June 7 at his home. Born June 7, 1908 in Atlanta, GA., he was the son of the late Minnie Louella and Thomas Henry Moore Sr. He was the devoted husband of Mildred B. Moore for 77 years. Mr. Moore served in the Home Guard in Georgia during WWII guarding the Atlanta Water Works. At the time Thomas and Mildred Moore bought their home in Avondale Estates, Mr. Moore was in business with his father who owned a mattress manufacturing business, The Imperial Bedding Company, in Atlanta, GA. The company manufactured box springs and mattresses for such places as Agnes Scott College, Georgia Tech, The Little White House in Warm Springs, GA, the Biltmore Hotel in Atlanta, the Georgian Hotel in Athens, and other hotels and hospitals as well as private residences. When Mr. Moore's father passed away in 1937, Mr. Moore took over the entire operation of the company and remained in the mattress manufacturing business until 1960. In 1961 Mr. Moore began a second career as manager of the Purchasing Department and assistant manager of Quality Control for Scottdale Textile Mills. He retired from the mill in 1973. For many years Mr. Moore was a member of the Atlanta Lions Club and was also active in the Avondale Kiwanis Club, serving as secretary for nine consecutive years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Avondale Estates for over 40 years, serving as Sunday School Departmental Secretary for many years and singing with the Saints Alive Choir for several years. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Martha Whenman of Tucker, GA and Peggy Burnette and husband Gaines of Atlanta, GA. Also surviving are four grandchildren, James Whenman and wife Paula of Norcross, GA., Catherine Chamblee and husband David of Springfield, PA., Gary Whenman of Lilburn, GA., David Burnette and wife Terri of Tigard, OR; nine great grandchildren, Krysti Roberts and husband Edward of Braselton, GA., Tina Jones and husband Nathan of Winder, GA., Gary Colin Whenman of Braselton, GA., Christopher and Hope Chamblee of Springfield, PA., and Bradley, Andrew, Michael, and Matthew Burnette of Tigard, OR; one step great grandson, Dan Mirza, of Norcross, GA.; two great-great granddaughters, Rebecka Roberts of Braselton and Mayetta Jones of Winder, GA. Friends may call Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at A.S. Turner & Sons Funeral Home, Decatur. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Avondale Estates, 47 Covington Rd., Avondale Estates with Rev. Clay Bowden and Dr. Eric Mathison co-officiating. Interment will be at Hillandale Cemetery in Lithonia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The United Methodist Children's Home, 500 S.
