Tommie Smith Powell

Tommie Powell died on October 15, 2008 at her home in Stone Mountain after a period of declining health. She was born in Comer, GA in January of 1920 and grew up in Decatur and Atlanta. As an adult she lived in Alma, GA, New York, NY, Decatur and Stone Mountain. She was a member of Indian Creek Baptist Church. She was the daughter of Anderson Lloyd Smith and Gertrude Cox Smith of Danielsville, Comer and Atlanta. She is predeceased by her parents, her husband Charles Avery Powell (Pete), her daughter Trudie Bartkus, her sister Ann Moon and, in childhood, her sister Hazel Smith and her brother Lloyd Smith. She is survived by her daughter Virginia Litzenberger and her husband Drew, sister Floriede Smith, son in law Patrick Bartkus, grandsons Andrew and Peter Litzenberger and their wives Laura and Andrea, granddaughter Avery Gregory and her husband Lewis, great grandchildren Jonathan, Reider and Alexander Litzenberger and Gracie Gregory, niece Ann Moon and her husband Tom, nephew Andy Moon and his wife Emily, grandnephew Jon Moon, grandnieces Beth Moon, Claudia Folk, and Annie Folk Pieper, and by her loving friends and caretakers Mizpah Miller and Vanderlin Morris. Tommie was a bookkeeper at American Seating Company and elsewhere for a number of years. She attended Agnes Scott College for two years. She had laughing eyes and a quick, sparkling wit. She was a skillful homemaker and fine mother, an artful seamstress and quilter, a thoughtful and observant writer and traveler, a ringleader in her church choir and a source of fun for everyone. She loved good books, beautiful music, the Braves, fierce games of Scrabble and awful puns. She never lost her wonderful sense of humor. She adored her husband Pete throughout their life together and through all the many years after his death. She was devoted to her family, her home, her friends and her faith. Family and friends are invited to gather on Sunday, October 26, 2008 at 3 PM at A.S Turner & Sons Funeral Home in Decatur with the memorial service immediately following at 4PM.In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Indian Creek Baptist Church, 3901 Rockbridge Road, Stone Mountain GA 30083.
