Valerie White Harper – lawyer, artist, writer, singer, world traveler, member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church, and native of McCormick, SC, died in her beloved home in Decatur, GA. Valerie was a graduate of Limestone College, Gaffney, SC, studied art at the University of SC, and later earned a law degree from Atlanta's John Marshall Law School. The Law Degree resulted from her work with the V.A. as a family caseworker where she decided to take a course to learn more about the rights of her clients. She enjoyed the classes and breezed through the course with an "A", took more courses, and completed the degree of Doctor of Jurisprudence in 1967.
Valerie was committed to help the war effort during WWII. She was a plane spotter for the Navy, took flying lessons, and volunteered as a Victory Bell at the USO. She later met and married Julian Harper, who was also from South Carolina. He was a patient man who appreciated punctuality. However, Valerie was a person with her own sense of time [slow] and they were always late wherever they went.
Valerie was pre-deceased by husband, Julian, an employee of the city of Atlanta and an active Shriner; and by her parents, John and Lauree White of McCormick, SC. The White Family ancestry dates back to the arrival of the Mayflower.
Valerie was self-confident yet approachable, serious yet mischievous. She lived life with a glint in her eye. She loved and appreciated her nieces, Judy Shealy of Leesville, SC and Sandra Wallace of Fort Mill, SC and their families; cousin Barry Boutchard and family of New Orleans; The White family of McCormick; many other relatives throughout the USA; and Gordy Mattox her longtime, good neighbor. The family wishes to thank the team of wonderful caregivers who made it possible for Valerie to remain in her home these last few months. Valerie will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
