Venketram Subramanian ('Chotu') passed away on February 6th, 2017 in Decatur, Georgia. He died of natural causes. He was 94.
Mr. Subramanian was born on March 11th, 1922 in Palamadai, Tamil Nadu, India, to his parents VAV and Kamalam Iyer. He graduated from St. Stephens College, New Delhi, India, with a Bachelors in Economics. He had a long and illustrious career in the Government of India for forty years, and retired as the Director General of Supplies and Disposals in 1980.
In 1954, he married Sundari Chandrasekaram. They lived in New Delhi with their three children, Jaishree Subramani, Radhika Nandakumar, and Ram Subramanian. Mr. & Mrs. Subramanian immigrated to the United States in 1989. He is survived by his wife Sundari, his daughter Jaishree, who lives in Long Island, New York, with her husband Mani and daughter Shreya, his daughter Radhika who lives in Sydney, Australia with her husband Nandu and two daughters, Anjana and Ananya, and his son Ram, who lives here in Atlanta with his wife Chinmayee and sons, Sanath and Saurav.
Mr. Subramanian was an avid sportsman with a natural gift for soccer and a passion for cricket. Even into his 90's he had a memory for every detail you would want to know. Price of milk, crude oil, stock market, soccer scores—no detail was too small. He attributed his sharp memory to his daily routine of doing the New York Times crossword puzzle; he said, "It keeps my Alzheimer's away."
To anyone who knew him, his adoration and respect for his wife was something to be admired and envied. Together, they charted 62 years of marriage. He, along with his wife, provided a safe place to land to countless close family and friends, and touched their lives with generosity and unrelenting support.
He loved his children and grandchildren dearly and recounted every minute detail of their lives, including humorous stories they told, and their accomplishments, of which there are many. He often noted with pride how his children and grandchildren had far surpassed him in their education.
His story lives on in his three children and five beloved grandchildren.
