Vera Jones Rumbley

Vera Christine Jones Rumbley, age 87, of Atlanta died Thursday, August 21, 2008 of complications from Alzheimer’s. She was born February 15, 1921 to Oscar Claude Jones and Grace Burnett Jones of Conyers. After graduating high School in Conyers, she attended DraughnBusinessSchool in Atlanta. Following graduation, she worked for Southern Freight Association where she met her husband, John T. (Red) Rumbley. After they became engaged, Vera went to work for Applied Engineering. She remained a loyal employee until her retirement at age 62. John and Vera bought their first and only home in Decatur in 1947. Her husband John died November 27, 1981. Vera has been a member of NorthDecaturUnitedMethodistChurch since moving to Decatur and has served in many church volunteer jobs over the years. Her volunteer service included serving meals to the homeless in a downtown homeless shelter, a children’s home, and the prison ministry. In addition, she volunteered for various community organizations stuffing an untold number of envelopes. A Christian, full of love for her Church and family, she has been an example of living a full life serving her Church, her family, and her community. Vera is survived by her brothers Allen O. Jones and Boyce A. Jones, Sr. and his wife Jane; nephews, Anthony R. Jones, Boyce A. Jones, Jr., Fred Jones, Jr., David Jones, Tim Brannon, and Tony Brannon; nieces, Robin Vaughn, Shelia Dyer, Teresa Piper, Cindy Hamilton, Marilyn Addison, Lorelei Jones, and their numerous children; cousins Angie Harwood (a faithful caregiver during Vera’s illness), Herbert Jones, Carl Jones; sister-in-law Thelma Jones; sister-in-law, Dorothy Brannon; 11 great nieces; 10 great nephews; and 5 great great nephews. A memorial service will be held in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons at 6 p.m. Thursday, September 4th, Rev. Arthur Wainwright officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. prior to the service at A. S. Turner & Sons. Arietha Lockhart will be the memorial service soloist. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Atlanta Community Food Bank, in memory of Vera Rumbley, 732 Joseph E. Lowery Blvd, Atlanta, GA 30318, Attn: John Montgomery.
