Vera Mew Hiller, age 87, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2015 with family and friends by her side. She had been under the care of the Hospice Unit at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia for a short time before her passing. Born in 1928 in Atlanta, Georgia to George Howell Mew and Louise Titman Mew, she graduated from Druid Hills High School, attended Ward Belmont College (now Belmont University) in Nashville, Tennessee and earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia in Athens. She also did post-graduate work at George Washington University Law School in Washington, DC. She was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority at the University of Georgia. She lived in Washington, DC; Charlotte, NC; San Marino, CA; and Dallas, TX before returning to Atlanta in 1978. Since returning to Atlanta, Vera was a member of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church and the Jake Ward Sunday School class, where she also served as secretary. Vera had a passion for genealogy and local and family history. With an exceptional memory, her expertise was called upon by many. Additionally, her family had a close association on multiple levels with Emory University for generations and she took great pride in her family's contributions to the growth and mission of Emory.
Survivors include her son, George Mew Hiller and his wife Marie of Atlanta and her other son, Russell Durell Hiller of Birmingham, AL; three grandchildren, George Mew Hiller, Jr. of Atlanta, Danielle Hiller Ford of Newnan, GA, and Emory Durell Hiller of Atlanta; one great-granddaughter, Sophia Marie Ford of Newnan, GA; and one sister, Margaret Maddox of Alpharetta, GA. She was preceded in death by both of her parents.
Services will be held at Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church in The Little Chapel, 1660 N. Decatur Rd., Atlanta, GA 30307 on Wednesday April 22 at 2:00 pm. Rev. Susan Pinson will be officiating. There will be a short time of fellowship following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the George Howell Mew Business Library Endowment at Emory University, named for Mrs. Hiller's father.
