Mrs. Virginia Rutland Whitley, a native of LaGrange, GA died Saturday, August, 30, 2008. She lived in the LaVista area until 2007, and then moved to Walton County to live with her daughter. A graduate of LaGrange High School, Mrs. Whitley attended Shorter College in Rome, GA., before her marriage in 1940. The Whitley’s moved to Atlanta the following year and continued to make it their home, interspersed with several job related transfers. She worked for 27 years as an administrative assistant in Sears Southern Territory Public Affairs Office. A member of Center Hill Baptist Church, and the Young at Heart Group, Mrs. Whitley also participated in the Seniors Are Special, The Egress Group, Fun Monday Bridge, and worked at the Brockett Elementary School Polling Place for DeKalb County. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Thomas Whitley, Sr., who died May 5, 1993, nineteen days before their son, John Edward Whitley, II. Mrs. Whitley is survived by her son, James Thomas, Jr. of Lawrenceville; daughter, Ellen Whitley Pittman, wife of David Pittman of Monroe; three grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 2nd at 1:00 P.M. in the chapel of A. S. Turner & Sons, with interment at Floral Hills Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at A. S. Turner & Sons.
